Progress Continues on Skagit County Jail, a 2016 Project to Watch

Work on the Skagit County Jail in Mount Vernon began in November 2015, much to the relief of jail staff. The county had been in need of new correctional facilities for more than a decade and regularly was forced to accommodate more than twice the 83 inmates for which it was originally rated. Once complete, the jail will contain 400 beds throughout both housing pods and dormitories, medical and dental care facilities, and a courtroom. It will also be built with ample space to expand to 800 beds in the future.

Chisago County May Soon Issue Request for Jail Construction Bids

After weighing the construction of a new jail facility for more than a decade, Chisago County, Minn., correctional officials may be ready to put the project to bid this March. Should the jail project remain on track, bids could be approved by April of this year, with completion in early 2018.

Dorchester County Jail to Open Four Months Ahead of Schedule

However, the new 80,500-square-foot Dorchester County Detention Center in South Carolina, is on track for completion an impressive four months ahead of schedule, and rings in at a modest $19.1 million including site work.

DeKalb County Anticipates Jail Expansion

A proposed $32 million expansion of the DeKalb County Jail in Sycamore reached a significant milestone in May when the county’s Jail Solution Committee announced it was preparing a list of funding recommendations.

Funding Disputes Keep Washington State Jail Empty

The $45 million Accountability and Restitution Center (ARC) in Tumwater has now sat empty for more than four years. Although upkeep on the facility costs the county roughly $430,000 annually, Thurston County commissioners and Sheriff John Snaza continue to disagree on how to properly fund the facility’s opening, forcing the county to rely on its increasingly inadequate 1970s-era jail facility.

Wilkes County correctional officials celebrated the dedication of a new 58,000-square-foot jail on Oct. 22.
