Thanks to a group of Iowa State University landscape architecture students, and Assistant Professor of landscape architecture, Julie Stevens, Iowa Correctional Institute for Women (ICIW) staff members no longer have to take their work stress home.
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad recently cut the ribbon on two newly constructed Iowa prisons, significantly improving and modernizing the state’s correctional system. Both the Iowa State Penitentiary and Iowa Correctional Institution for Women will replace their aging original facilities, improve efficiency and better prepare inmates for release.
Students from Iowa State University’s Department of Landscape Architecture teamed up with inmates at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women (ICIW) in Mitchellville to construct a set of classrooms on the ICIW campus. These multipurpose outdoor classrooms will be located in the center of the new 30-acre campus.
