Utah Tackles Recidivism Rates, Prison Growth

Utah recently became the 25th state to embark on a corrections and sentencing reform campaign aimed improving rehabilitation and reducing recidivism and prison construction. Governor Gary Herbert announced the state’s Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice (CCJJ) will continue work with The Pew Charitable Trusts to increase public safety and limit expected growth in the state’s prison budget.

DeSoto Supervisors Green Light Jail Addition

L.A. County Considers Expansive Jail Plans

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted on May 6 to replace the county’s primary correctional facility with a new two-tower structure. The future 4,860-bed Consolidated Correctional Treatment Facility (CCTF) will replace the larger, though rapidly deteriorating, Men’s Central Jail (MCJ), which has long been a target for human rights groups and inmate advocates.

Union Rallies for New Pennsylvania Prison

Kalamazoo Jail Anticipates June Opening

The second of two major expansions to the Kalamazoo County Jail is now on track for a June 2014 opening. The first 75,000-square-foot addition to the main jail structure opened in spring 2013, adding more than 90 cells to the chronically crowded facility. Upon completion of this final phase, the jail additions will comprise 58 two-person cells, 20 four-person cells and 15 cells dedicated for medical use.

The roughly $15 million project wrapped up last month, and correctional staff began moving inmates into the new and improved facility immediately following the dedication.
