Kern County Justice Facility Closer to Construction

Work on the new $100.5 million Kern County Justice Facility in Bakersfield is on track to begin in August 2015. This first phase of construction is scheduled to wrap up by June 2017, and is being built with the aid of the state’s AB 900 funding allocation.

California to Provide Counseling to Mentally Ill Inmates

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials announced recently that mentally ill inmates in the state’s prison system will now receive more humane treatment. The state filed a new policy earlier this month to allow mentally ill inmates to participate in counseling after an incident as opposed to receiving extended sentences or being sent directly to isolation cells.

Construction Begins on Kings County Jail Addition

Construction on the Kings County jail addition in Hanford began on July 28. The 252-bed project is yet another California project being constructed to help relieve overcrowding as a result of prison realignment.

Brown Extends Inmate Transfer Bill

California Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 1512 into law on June 23, extending inter-county inmate transfers aimed at reducing overcrowding and early release.

Adelanto Detention Center Meets Demands of Realignment

New Calaveras County Jail Proceeds On Track

When completed in July 2013, the new 160-bed Calaveras County Jail and Sheriff’s Office in San Andreas, Calif., will be a welcome relief. Replacing the current 49-year old overcrowded facility, the new project consists of two buildings — a 76,500-square-foot jail and a 41,500-square-foot sheriff’s office building.

On June 27th the California Legislature passed the remaining budget trailer bills including all those related to corrections and public safety, and the Governor signed all of the bills to complete the 2012-13 budget package.

$602.9 Million Approved Under AB900, Phase II

On March 8, Corrections Standards Authority approved $602,881,000 in funds for jail construction projects in 11 counties, the second phase under realignment, which amounts to a $1.2 billion investment in county jails, under AB 900.
