Work Stopped on Orleans Parish Prison

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu ordered the stoppage of all work on the contentious Orleans Parish Prison on June 24, only to have a civil district judge rule in favor of the sheriff’s office and temporarily order progress to resume on June 26. Work will now continue until July 8, when a hearing will take place to decide the project’s next move.

Yolo County Plans for Detention Center Expansion

Plans are underway for the expansion and update of Yolo County’s Monroe Detention Center in Woodland. San Francisco-based Lionakis is serving as the architect on the project, and several drafts have already been designed.

The GEO Group to Re-Open Michigan Facility

Plans are moving forward with the re-opening of the North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin. The 1,740-bed facility, owned by Boca Raton, Fla.-based The Geo Group, a private prison operator, recently signed a contract with the Vermont Department of Corrections to house up to 675 inmates at the Baldwin facility as early as July.

Arkansas DOC Adds Beds, Re-Entry Programs to Ease Overcrowding

The Arkansas Department of Correction has started on Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s $33 million plan to address prison overcrowding in the state. While the plan does not involve building a new prison, it does involve adding prison beds, hiring new parole and probation officers, and investing in re-entry and alternative sentencing programs.
