San Diego Completes First Phase of SDCWDF

The $162 million Phase 1 portion of the new San Diego County Women’s Detention Facility (SDCWDF) in Santee will be completed on June 30, with the completion of the $60 million Phase 2 scheduled for Jan. 7, 2016.

Tabor Correctional Institution Debuts Addition

An addition to the recently opened Tabor Correctional Institution in Tabor City was completed earlier this year with inmates moving in this past February. The 252-bed addition brings the facility’s capacity to over 1,700, making it the second largest prison in the state behind Scotland Correctional Institution. Both the Scotland and Tabor prisons were part of a six-prison building effort that ended with the opening of Tabor Correctional in 2008.
 

New Orleans Weighs Inmate Housing Options

The lack of specialized housing for inmates with severe mental illness in the soon to be completed Orleans Parish Prison (OPP) is the latest point of contention for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO) and the city’s mayor. Though the new 433,000-square foot prison will improve significantly on New Orleans’ hurricane-ravaged correctional facilities, it currently does not include a unit for inmates living with acute and sub-acute mental illness. This has prompted Sheriff Marlin Gusman to propose construction of another new correctional facility.
 

Pueblo Unit Opens for Juvenile Justice Girls

To avoid sending teenage girls accused or convicted of crimes to a maximum-security women’s prison, the state Department of Children and Families (DCF) decided to renovate an existing, self-contained building on the Albert J. Solnit Psychiatric Center – South Campus in Middleton.

Thomson Prison Receives Funding Boost

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) announced on June 5 that he and other members of the Senate Appropriations Committee had approved $43.7 million for equipment and staffing to continue the activation of Thomson Prison.
