AJA Wraps Up its 35th Annual Conference & Jail Expo in Austin

The American Jail Association’s (AJA) 35th Annual Conference & Jail Expo took place on May 22-25, in Austin. AJA’s Annual Conference & Jail Expo is the only national event that focuses on local jails, according to the association. Since the event took place in Austin, it was co-hosted by the Travis County Sheriff’s Department.
 

Ohio Announces Prison Farms Closures, Union Files Injunction

Ten prison farms across Ohio may soon close as part of a state plan to sell the properties and devote the proceeds to inmate employment and rehabilitation programs, Director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections Gary Mohr told the Associated Press last month. The move to close the facilities and liquidate all assets prompted the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association (OCSEA) to seek an injunction.
 

San Luis Obispo to Debut Juvenile Hall Expansion

The current San Luis Obispo County Juvenile Hall can hold 45 minors, both male and female, but it lacks the adequate space for classrooms counseling areas and recreational areas. That’s why an expansion project is currently underway, adding new secure juvenile detention facilities that increase the existing facility’s capacity and provide improved youth programs and staff services.
 

Top Project: Broward County Courthouse Nears Completion

The new Broward County Courthouse is scheduled to open this summer, about a year after the original projected completion date. Construction on the about $245 million courthouse began in August 2012.
