Sillings Architects + Planners, based in Charleston, W.V., designed the Lewis County Judicial Annex in Weston, W.V., which debuted in August 2013. The new two-story judicial annex is one of several courthouse projects that Sillings completed in recent years.

Ohio Sued Over Seclusion of Mentally Ill Youth

A lawsuit filed on March 12 by the U.S. Justice Department may block Ohio juvenile correction facilities from secluding offenders with mental illnesses. The suit seeks a temporary restraining order to limit the practice, and claims that the state has, “systematically violated substantive due process rights of boys with mental health disorders” at several juvenile correctional facilities, causing the offenders “real, irreparable harm.”

Porterville Courthouse Debuts Innovative Design

The new South Justice Center for the Superior Court of Tulare County debuted last year on an approximately seven-acre site, which was formerly the Porterville Fairgrounds and Municipal Ballpark. The 96,000-square-foot facility brings the county the space and amenities it needs to be on par with other court facilities in the state.

Michigan Fines Aramark for Inconsistencies, Fraternization

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) has fined Aramark more than $92,000, citing improper meal counts, unauthorized meal substitutions, improper relationships between inmates and Aramark employees and lax security. The company, which has 30 years of experience in correctional institutions, is contracted to provide meals to roughly 45,000 Michigan inmates.

Allegan County Debuts New Jail

The new $20 million Allegan County Sheriff’s Office and Corrections Center debuted to the public on Saturday. The correctional officers, followed by the inmates, will move into the 35,378-square-foot facility in the next few months.
