Maryland Cracks Down on Prison Cell Phone Use

Nearly six months after implementing a pilot program targeting contraband cell phones in prisons, Maryland correctional officials have officially adopted the new technology. Gov. George O’Malley unveiled the new “managed access” system at a press conference in the Baltimore City Detention Center (BCDC) in early February.

Cumberland County Dedicates New Jail Expansion

After a 17-month construction process, Cumberland County officials recently celebrated the dedication of the expanded Cumberland County Detention Center. The roughly $15 million project wrapped up last month, and correctional staff began moving inmates into the new and improved facility immediately following the dedication.

The first phase of the $26.7 million expansion and renovation of the Denton County Jail is well underway and should be completed in September. Satterfield & Pontikes Construction (S&P) is serving as the general contractor, while HDR is serving as the architect. Both have offices in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

After standing for more than 130 years, structural demolition has begun on the infamous maximum security Maryland House of Correction. The aging and inadequate facility saw a dramatic increase in violence in recent years, prompting correctional officials to close it in 2007.
