A new jail nearing completion in Cork will be a distinct departure from the one it is replacing. Designed to accommodate family visitation and provide a healthier, more comfortable environment for inmates and staff, the new Cork Prison will offer improved sanitation, more modern facilities and opportunities for inmates to improve their both physical and mental well being.
Renovations to many of the Johnson County Jail’s security systems and controls began in April and were completed earlier this month. The jail, located in Iowa City, now has new door locks, cameras and an upgraded control room.
Construction on Flagler County’s new inmate housing facility, located in Bunnell, reached a significant milestone earlier this month as crews began the installation of 86 new prefabricated cells. The installation marks the jail expansion’s halfway point and the end of the first of two phases of construction.
The Prison Ecology Project was formed earlier this year in order to address the problems that arise when prisons negatively impact the environment. Not only can inmates face possible health and safety risks, but the land and surrounding communities can be impacted as well.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said last week that he will immediately be closing the Baltimore City Detention Center (BCDC) — a jail that has notoriously been known for its association with violent gangs — and the shutdown should only take a couple weeks.
