Springhill Institution Finally Accepts Inmates

Two, 96-bed units built as part of a $40 million expansion to Springhill Institution finally began accepting inmates after remaining empty for a year because the cell doors wouldn’t lock. The medium-security institution began accepting inmates into one unit on Sept. 29 and into the other at the beginning of December. London, Ontario-based EllisDon Corp. served as the general contractor on the project.

Ontario Expands Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre

The Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services announced on May 5 that work to expand the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre in New London is now underway. Work will include the addition of a new 112-bed, 25,000-square-foot regional intermittent care facility for males that will address capacity issues, reduce contraband and improve safety for both correctional staff and inmates, according to a statement by the ministry.
