The Goldberg Group is Selected to Design New Mississippi Jail

JACKSON COUNTY,  Miss. — Another try has been given to build a new Adult Detention Center for Jackson County. On Oct. 1, supervisors approved a contract The Goldberg Group of St. Joseph, Mo., to design the new Jackson County Adult Detention Center.

In August, the supervisors ended their deal with Pryor & Morrow Architects and Engineers, which had held the jail contract for years and been paid $1.2 million for their design work on the brick-and-mortar jail that was scrapped, according to The Mississippi Press.

A $30 million cap has been placed on the new design.

The Goldberg Group made its pitch for a jail constructed of modular steel cells that can be stacked two- or four-cells high upon a deep foundation.

Board President John McKay said previously he thought the project should go out to bid and be under construction by April 2013. McKay noted the Goldberg design will be not only cheaper to build but cheaper to operate for long-term savings.

As of press time, a contract with The Goldberg Group had not been signed.
