American Correctional Association, 142nd Congress of Correction

Denver, July 20-25, 2012

As the planes descended upon Denver International Airport, amidst record high temperatures and an occasional lightning bolt, speakers, attendees, ACA board members and exhibitors, descended upon the Colorado Convention Center for what has proved to be a very successful American Correctional Association summer conference.

For more than 125 years, ACA has supported the cause of corrections and correctional effectiveness as the oldest and largest international correctional association in the world. ACA is presenting more than 80 workshops on topics ranging from adult corrections to mental health and juvenile detention, said ACA President Daron Hall in a statement.

Keynote Laura Kaeppeler, Miss America 2012, is the founder of Circles of Support, an organization that serves children whose parents are incarcerated by providing them with resources and tools to help overcome adversity in a positive way. Kaeppeler was once a child of an incarcerated parent.

Every year, ACA invites corrections and criminal justice professionals from around the world to participate in a variety of educational workshops and sessions. This year’s E.R. Cass Award Banquet, on July 24, will pay tribute to Burl Cain and Gary Maynard, for their exemplary service and dedication to the corrections profession.

The ACA’s Executive Committee for 2010-2012 includes four elected officers: Daron Hall, president; Christopher Epps, president-elect; Patricia Caruso, vice president; and Mary Livers, Ph.D., treasurer. Harold W. Clarke, immediate past president, and the association’s executive director, James A. Gondles Jr.; and two members of the Board of Governors, David Thomas, M.D., J.D.; and Artis “Ray” Hobbs; also serve on the Executive Committee.

In 2013: ACA Winter will convene in Houston, Texas, on Jan. 25-30, 2013, and in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 9-14.
