Jackson County sheriff Daniel Heyns will serve as director of the Michigan Department of Corrections beginning in June. A chairman of the Michigan Sheriffs' Coordinating and Training Council and the Jackson Narcotics Enforcement Team, Heyns is also treasurer to the Michigan Sheriffs' board of directors. He has been responsible for a 450-bed jail operation, 911 central dispatch center and multiple specialized units including marine patrol, detective bureau, K-9, narcotics, traffic, firearms, Special Response Team and school liaison. He previously served as Jackson County under-sheriff and was a Captain in the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Heyns earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Michigan and later obtained his master's in criminal justice from Michigan State University. A graduate of the National FBI Academy, Heyns received his State of Michigan Police Officer Certification in 1981.
