Italian Inmates Battle Global Warming With Ice Cream

MILAN, Italy — Inmates at a prison outside Milan will contribute to the fight against global warming by producing environmentally sustainable ice cream, officials say.

A group of inmates from the high-security unit of Casa di Reclusione Milano-Opera will use only fresh, non-genetically modified produce, including milk and fruits, sourced from local farmers when they begin in-house production of the artisan gelato in spring 2008, officials say.

The project intends to help the fight against global warming by contributing to the reduction of food miles and greenhouse emissions.
